Sometimes summer days call for something indoors. As much as we all love the great outdoors, a little air conditioning never hurt anyone. If you’re looking for places to beat the heat in Downtown Corpus Christi this summer, keep on reading!
Art Center of Corpus Christi
The Art Center of Corpus Christi is, as if the name isn’t a dead giveaway, constantly at the center of art in Corpus Christi. They offer a constant array of classes including photography, oil painting, watercolor and many more and have incredible rotating exhibits in their galleries. The Citrus Bistro is also located in the building if you’re looking for a little lunch in between gazing at the exquisite art.
Treehouse Art Collective
Treehouse Art Collective is a wonderfully eclectic art gallery and shop featuring all local artists. Located in Water Street Market, it’s the perfect place if you’re looking to shop and view some lovely pieces in the heart of Downtown Corpus Christi.
Texas Surf Museum
If you want to spend part of your day pretending you’re on the water while being in the air conditioning, Texas Surf Museum is the place for you. It’s conveniently located in Water Street Market next to Executive Surf Club and “explores the history of surfing in general and showcases the Lone Star State’s unique place in that history”, according to its website.
K Space Contemporary
K Space Contemporary or as we like to call it, the Mural Expert of Corpus Christi, is a non-profit dedicated to promoting and fostering art in Downtown Corpus Christi. They hold around 20 exhibits a year and host summer mural camps, weekly drawing sessions, workshops and participate in our monthly ArtWalk. It’s your own stop shop of all the contemporary works of the Coastal Bend.
House of Rock
House of Rock isn’t just the place for incredible pizza, it’s also the premier concert and event venue in the Marina Arts District. They just celebrated 14 years in Downtown Corpus Christi with no signs of slowing down. Whether you’re in the mood for some rock, reggae, alternative or everything in between, House of Rock is the place for you!
American Bank Center
Corpus Christi’s American Bank Center is surely an integral part of entertainment in downtown. The facility hosts conventions, trade shows, live performances and concerts, and sporting events. Not to mention the Buc Days Rodeo. With its extensive variety of options, you’re sure to find something to occupy your time during these hot summer days and nights.
Not only is the Selena Auditorium part of the American Bank Center, but it is also one of the most attended entertainment venues in the Coastal Bend. It boasts performances by world-renowned comedians, bands and most importantly local groups like the Corpus Christi Ballet. Harbor Playhouse has been a constant staple of Downtown Corpus Christi since the 1920s. This community theater displays nothing short of the best Corpus Christi has to offer with classic, contemporary and original plays and musicals. Gyspy, said by some to be the greatest musical ever created, is currently playing through August 11th. So get your tickets for an incredible weekend night in the SEA District!
Texas State Museum of Asian Cultures
Visit the Texas State Museum of Asian Cultures to take a trip through Asia you’ll never forget. Over the past 40 years, the museum has helped its many visitors admire the beauty of India, Japan, Thailand, Korea, the Philippines and so many more. Spend your afternoon viewing the amazing artistry and culture of these historic places, you won’t regret it!
Corpus Christi Museum of Science & History
Want to know how Corpus Christi came to be? Not just when it was settled, but what it was like 500 years ago?! Stop by the Museum of Science and History for some fun for the whole family. View historic shipwrecks, incredible art from area families and plenty of other exhibits that represent Corpus Christi’s unique culture.
Art Museum of South Texas
The Art Museum of South Texas, with its striking architecture and fabulous exhibitions, is one of the perfect places to spend a hot summer day. View their permanent or rotating exhibits, send the kiddos to one of their many art classes and camps, or stop by Hester’s for some grub! Whatever you choose, it’ll be a perfect day spent by the water with some of the finest art South Texas has to offer.
Texas State Aquarium
The Texas State Aquarium is the place for land and sea lovers alike. It is a nonprofit dedicated to promoting and pursuing environmental conservation and rehabilitation in the Gulf of Mexico. Through their exhibits, shows, presentations, educational programs, wildlife rescue and so much more, they engage the community with animals to inspire an appreciation for our seas!
